Seasonal Issues: Dry Skin


Well what can one expect when its winter times cold and chilling climates what else!! For all those who are beauty conscious and those who are not one thing that makes you to pay attention during such cold days is your skin. Skin due to extreme change in weather does react and one of the reactions that are very common during winter is dryness. Here in this article we would see what different steps one can take to either prevent dryness of skin or how one can treat it with simple home remedies.

1) Massage or Abaynaga:
Our skin is dry and what we do to remove the dryness... well for our cars we lubricate them to avoid friction. Then well in case of our own body oil remains the best answer. Ayurveda highly recommends sesame seed oil massage just before shower. In many European countries Olive oil massage, while in North American region Grape seed oil is recommended. The whole idea is to reduce friction between cells and also reduce Vatta dosha which is normally aggravated in one’s body during such cold days. (Read more : Benefits of Abaynaga )

2) Dry Scrubs :
Well if you have done the Oil massage then what is advisable for you to do is just before Abyanaga have a dry scrub all over the body. Up till very recently I hardly believed in this advice myself. But after trying it with combination of oil application I found it very useful. Scrubs normally remove the top layer of dead skin giving space for the new. Also scrubs increases circulation which remains very important.

3) Simple Applications:
Well other than oil application one can also use combination of many natural products to apply on one’s skin especially one’s face to reduce the dryness of the skin. Here are few options
a) Milk+Saffron: Application of this combination is well known since the time of Cleopatra. Not just it decreases dryness but also brings glow to one’s face.
b) Bananas: Applying ripe mashed bananas can help one a lot. The creaminess of the fruit kept on your skin for about 15 to 30 minutes is enough to give result.
c) Egg Yolk: Another excellent home remedy is egg yolk... simply apply a mask of well beaten egg yolk to your face. Let it dry out completely and remove it later and see the difference in your skin.

4)  Dietary Changes:
Well a balanced diet is all one asks for a good skin. Still according to the principle of Ayurveda because of the season being so cold a need to increase the intake of fats in one diet is called for. It does not mean to have in excess but just not to forget good healthy fats in our food. Ghee, Virgin Olive oil, Nuts, seeds like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds would provide the needed dietary fats.

5) Life style changes:
Without changes made in our lifestyle it remains hard to treat a condition. Here are few of those changes
a) Avoid excess of alcohol, caffeine products like coffee during such cold seasons.  
b) Avoid excess time spend in shower or bath especially in warm water as it might cleanse all the oil glands of the skin making it more dry.
c) Well covered body especially when walking in cold windy areas would help a lot in keeping the skin moist. Excess wind on the face and any parts of the body might lead to dryness.

7 Benefits of Ginger

Ginger or “Zinzgiber Officinale” is been widely used in traditional Ayurvedic, Chinese medicines for ages .A small herb that can also be cultivated in your garden if you live in the topical belt .This plants are also know for their horticulture value in gardening .Its the roots that have medical values and are cultivated prominently in India , China , Philippines and Caribbeans.

2] Anti Inflammatory property:

5] Women and Ginger :
Ginger can be used in many conditions for woman's health. Its a good to be taken if you have painful menstrual cramps, amenorrhea.

5 Snacks to Keep Warm This Winter


I just came from India and "wohh" it was cold there… and guess what I found in Canada, what else cold again. Well the temperature was different at both the places, but for the locals it was a chilling winter which made them to take extra precaution. Ayurveda always believes that food habits of person needs to change as seasons changes as the body tends to changes its level of appetite and digestive power. Here in this article are 5 herbs, food groups that would keep one warm during such cold winter days. Yes they are tasty too …

1] Eggs:
One of the biggest sources of protein and off course very cheap, eggs are considered to be very healthy for such cold days. Ayurveda believes that the heat require for the development of the little bird is stored in this little egg which if eaten is provided to you to keep your warm. Boiled eggs are often sold at corners in many places of India, especially during the time of winter season. Have a one or two and see the difference.

2] Peanuts:
For all vegetarians who do not eat eggs... here is something you might cherish. Peanuts or also known as groundnuts are excellent food snack to have during such cold days. Not only they are full of good fats but also for a vegetarian person they contain proteins. I remember those days during my childhood when by grandmother used to give peanuts and jaggery in small quantity to snack during winter season.

3] Sesame Seed:
If by any chance you are allergic to peanuts you do not need to worry... Sesame seed are for you then. This seeds normally seen in Chinese and other Asian cooking are known for their high value for fats and warmness too. Not just the seeds but even sesame seed oil can be used to apply all over the body before shower to give the required heat.
Like peanuts even this seeds combine with jaggery make a great treat for all Indians during the winter season.

4] Ginger:
Well how can one forget the benefits of Ginger during such days. Yes one cannot consume it raw but ginger tea is always the choice of tea to have during such chilly days. One can receive the warmness of this tea as soon as one drinks just one sip of the tea.
Ginger is also known to protect from all different types of issues of cough and cold caused due to such cold weather.

5] Black Pepper:
If one can enjoy snacking all the above products to keep warmth, here is a spice which can be added to give the same benefit. Black pepper known for its spiciness can also bring heat to one’s body when consumed. Have some black pepper one your soup today; it should be of a good quality you would find some perspiration coming out soon. That is what I call heat to the body.

To face winter one need to just get out of the house and face it head on. Enjoy the moment as one would say. Eat healthy, dress properly and face it with head one attitude.

What is Bulgur?
If you clean and parboil whole wheat, then dry it, crush it, and sift it, you’ll have bulgur. However, you can also purchase and use it as whole kernels. Bulgur cooks very quickly and, if you soak it in water or broth, it’s ready to use in a healthy dish without being cooked. It contains the organic compound ferulic acid, which is a powerful antioxidant found in plant cell wall components. Ferulic acid attacks free radicals, which are often responsible for the development of cancer, accelerated aging of the body’s cells, and DNA damage. This acid has also been found to directly prevent liver and breast cancer tumors in animal studies.

Where Can I Find It?
There are several different options when it comes to finding and purchasing bulgur. You can order it online from a company like Sunnyland Mills, look for it at a farming co-op or farmer’s market, or buy it from a health or specialty food store. You can even find Bob’s Red Mill bulgur at Wal-Mart locations that offer groceries, and you can look for Arrowhead Mills bulgur at Whole Foods and other more mainstream vendors. If you have a local Middle Eastern market, this is probably the best place to find bulgur.

What Can I Do with It?
Use coarse bulgur to replace rice or cous cous; a medium grind for fillings, stuffings, and cereals; and a fine grind to make tabbouleh. To cook your bulgur, you can simply simmer it for about 15 minutes, let it stand for another 10, then fluff it with a fork and use it as a stand-alone dish or as a pre-cooked ingredient. Once you’ve cooked the bulgur, it triples in volume, so don’t worry that you won’t have enough. If you’d like to make a cold salad with your bulgur, it’s best to cook it by pouring boiling water (a 3:1 ratio of water to bulgur) over it, then leaving it to soak for 30-40 minutes. Again, drain the water away and fluff with a fork to obtain the best consistency.

You can make a wonderful tabbouleh using this soaking method to cook your bulgur. Simply add olive oil, lemon juice, chopped fresh parsley and mint, salt and pepper, and a mixture of chopped cucumber, tomatoes, and green onions. The proportions depend on your taste, but parsley tends to dominate this fresh and flavorful dish. Freshly ground black pepper is best in this salad, so make sure that you have your peppercorns and grinder at the ready. Your tabbouleh should be refrigerated for at least one hour before serving.

How to Save on a Gym Membership



“75% of my readers I bet are thinking of losing weight for this New Year Resolution. Many would love to join the Gym, but not all can afford those crazy bucks. Here is a post written by Liz who speaks on how to save on the Gym membership”.

I love working out, but one of things that I don’t like about it is the gym membership.  Just about every gym around me makes me sign some sort of contract, and the high pressured sales is worse than anything that you can come across.

While you don’t have to go to a gym, many of us want to.  I wanted to show you how you can save on your next gym membership purchase, or maybe if you already have one, I can show you how you can save even more!

#1 Take advantage of offers:  When I was going to college, I took advantage of many gym membership offers.  I honestly had about 10 gyms within 25 miles.  I would take the introductory rate, and stay there until it expired.    These introductory rates included $20 for 6 months, first 3 months free, etc.  Yes, it’s a pain in the butt to cancel your membership, but if you just tell them you’re moving, they will cut you some slack.
TIP:  January is generally the best time to get the best offer, as everyone wants to sign up because of their New Year’s resolution.

#2 Negotiate with them:  Just because you have a gym in your area, and you think it’s expensive, it doesn’t mean that you have to pay that price.  Consider asking them if they will match a competitor ad, or even come down in price.  It really doesn’t hurt to ask, and you’ll be surprised at how many people say yes!

#3 Consider those that don’t advertise:  Look into your local YMCA, or even a smaller community center that has a gym.  Look into the prices, and you will find that many of these places are a lot cheaper than you think.

#4 Ask friends or family:  If you have a friend, or family that lives in a condo complex, or even an apartment community, you can always ask them if they have a gym there.  If they do, ask how you can take advantage of it as well.  Since it won’t cost the resident anything, you can just tell them that you live with your friend, or family member.  By doing this, you probably won’t have to pay anything.

#5 Ask your employer:  If you work with a major employer, ask them about gym discounts.  You will find that some can get you a discount on your gym membership.  It never hurts to ask about this.

#6 Your health insurance:  Just like your employer, ask your health insurance provider about gym membership discounts.  You may find that there’s a plan available as well.

#7 Ask for Financial Aid :
YMCA and many clubs like that do offer certain financial aids for those who are in lower economic zone. Feel free to ask about this if you feel you think you can get those discount.

These seven steps should easily get you on the right path, when you want to save a few extra bucks.  Now, you can always consider getting your own equipment as well.  While some of these tips may take more work, it will be worth the savings in the long haul.

How to Lose Pregnancy Weight Successfully



Once we find out we’re pregnant, we’re overwhelmed with joy.  We are eager to learn the gender, can’t wait to see what they look like, and of course want to hold them more than ever!  It seems like we just have that “glow” when we’re pregnant.  Although, that glow tends to fade once we have the baby.  Now, all the attention is focused on the baby, and we’re left with a body that is much different than to begin with.
If you struggled with some extra weight gain during your pregnancy, you don’t have to live with it forever.  In fact, you can start losing the weight today.  Below are a few ways to lose your unwanted pregnancy pounds successfully.

1] Start with rest:  First of all, you’re probably lacking a good amount of sleep.  So, get a good night’s rest (if that’s possible), and clear your mind.  Don’t beat yourself up too much over your weight gain.  Just keep in mind, tomorrows a new day for anything.

2] Plan ahead for meals:  Once you’ve gotten your good night’s sleep, you will want to plan ahead for your meals.  Think about what you’ll eat that day, and start preparing ahead of time.  When we have a plan we tend to stick to a healthier schedule than if we wait until the last minute to eat healthy and exercise.{ 10 Healthy Eating Habits }

3] Drinks:  It is very common to consume a large amount of calories through what we drink.  If you can, try to limit yourself on the pop, juice and alcoholic beverages.  Instead, stick to things like water, or  de-caffeinated tea or some herbal tea.

4] Small portions:  It is said that you should eat 5-6 small meals each day instead of 3 big ones.  This keeps your metabolism going, and never gives you that starving feeling that will make you over eat.

5] Increased exercise:  Try to increase your exercise.  There is nothing like taking your new baby to the park for a walk, playing some of your favorite sports with your family and friends or riding your bike up to the local store instead of driving.Yoga meditation can also play a big role in losing that extra pound.

6] New hobbies: Try to find some new hobbies that will get you more active.  Whether you play volleyball every Wednesday with your girlfriends, you take your dog and baby for a walk around the subdivision or you pick up something new like rollerblading you will get the exercise all while having cost-free hobbies!

There’s tons of it, and it’s all really cheap. From large exercise machines to hand weights, get it used at your local second-hand store.
  3. Use household items: If you don’t want to buy weights, you can make some yourself using cans of food for hand weights or jugs of water for heavier weights. You can even use these tips for creating your own weights at home using sand, cans, tennis balls, and more.

And with fitness advice, you can get a lot of free advice on diet and healthy eating programs that can help you replace energy drinks and store-bought protein shakes with cheaper, healthier homemade options.


Getting in shape can be hard. It requires determination and consistency. But it doesn’t require a lot of money—if you do it right. You can get in shape using free resources and items that you already have around the house. And when you get in shape, you’ll be even happier knowing that you did it without having to pay an arm and a leg for a gym membership.

5 Habits that Make you Fat

Weight-loss remains one of the hottest topic when its New Year time. I am sure many of you would have this as your resolution for this year. Well here is an article that might help you to understand some of the habits that can make you over weight. I am sure by changing some of the habits one can keep one’s weight under control.


  • Laziness:
One habit that is very peculiar with humans is a biggest culprit of many health conditions and also for our overall growth. We humans tend the warmth of the chair and forget about any physical work out. The more sophisticated we get the more we gain and more we forget about working out. This year make sure you would devote some time to work on this habit. Try being more athletic and less lazy and see...
  • Eating when not Hungry:
Most of us eat when it’s time to eat do you know that. Actually I have seen many mothers forcing their babies to eat just because its time. We then take this habit all over life; we eat just because it’s time to eat. Our body has its own system and it would be better to understand the system.   • Heavy Dinner and Light Lunches :
Yes we work the whole day and it is nice to have a huge meal at the night time. Not just practical but also it helps us to spend some quality time to relax, be with the family and enjoy food. Having a huge dinner can be more troublesome to gain of weight. We would be eating food and then even before it gets digested we are going to sleep thus decreasing the metabolism.   • Dessert Consumption:
Dessert was something to be eaten more like weekend thing and not a day to day affair. But gone are those days, easy access, money have bought us closer to have such treats every day any time.   • Sodas, Diet Soda, and Alcohol:
Walk in any restaurant and the first thing they would bring to you in either a pop or some alcohol, both of those which can be high in calories. Diet Soda was a change for a while, but still with research of harms of Aspartame which can harm your body.
