Seven Organisms that Live Inside the Human Body

Today on this blog I present Mary Ward who would be writing on a very different and interesting topic. Human Body is a very amazing  full of unknown frontier even today. Mysterious  fold and unfold every second everyday. Today in this post Mary is going to explain us different Organisms that live Inside the Human Body.  Helpful are some , while harmful are others. I hope you would enjoy this post.


It can be unsettling to contemplate the idea that there are various creatures living inside of you body, but is true.  A whole category of living things called microorganism regularly in habit the human body.  Many of these creatures actually feed off the body in various ways or eliminate other materials.  There are helpful organisms and those that actually do harm. 

Those that work in a symbiotic relationship with our bodies may even protect us from destructive microorganisms.  Still, parasites and viruses do manage to get into the body.  This category can be dangerous even fatal depending on the type.

If you want to know more, then take a look at 7 organisms that live inside the human body.

Protozoa These little beasties are classified as parasites, although they do perform some positives services by cutting down the bacterial and micro-fungal populations in various parts of the body.  That said, certain protozoa are very aggressive and can make you sick or cause serious internal damage. 

Worms – In this microscopic context, worms such as the roundworm and the tapeworm are a form of parasitic organism that may end up in certain part of the body due to environmental interactions or the ingestion of contaminated food or water.  These worms may live undetected for many years in side the human host body; although, they may also cause internal injuries or be the root cause of other illnesses.

Bacteria – The human body is home to thousands of bacteria.  Many of these bacteria are helpful agents that aid the body in breaking down waste materials or eliminating foreign elements that would otherwise cause harm.  At the same time, they are the causes of all sorts of illnesses that plague us such as typhoid, cholera, meningococcal meningitis, tuberculosis, and tetanus, to less dangerous urinary tract infections, boils, and acne. 

Fungi Micro-fungi may inhabit the body as molds or yeasts.  Certain areas are more prone to the presence of different fungus types than others are.  While some fungi are essentially harmless, other strains can cause serious illnesses in even healthy individuals.

Archaea – While they were once considered a type of bacteria, the archaea are not defined as distinct micro-organic species.  One example is the amoeba.  They may find their ways into the body through contaminated foods or water.

Viruses – These microorganisms are far smaller than bacteria, and they to make their home inside of people.  They live by destroying the host cells add multiplying throughout the body's cells.  Diseases like AIDS, polio, and influences are caused by viruses.  They are destructive organisms that eventually destroy the host unless some treatment is used to stop or slow their development.

Prions – It might be stretching it a bit to call the prion a microorganism, though there are those who treat it as one.  This microorganism is an infectious agent that is basically a protein that lacks DNA and RNA (this is why it is a stretch to call it a living creature).  Prions can cause problems when they come in contact with the body's normal proteins.

Adho Mukha Svasana

Downward Dog Pose
Up till now we have seen many poses that are vigorous and difficult for some. In today’s post we would see a pose which is very easy and liked my most of students who do this pose. Here is a pose which even a person who suffers from high blood pressure would enjoy, called as “Adho Mukha Svanasana”.

The name is derived from combination of two Sanskrit words “Adho” meaning downward, "Mukha" means facing and the word “Svana” means Dog. Literally in simple English this pose is also known by many as Downward Facing Dog Pose. The pose takes the time of the dog as in this pose one copies the way a dog would stretch his back every day.

How to do this pose:

  1. Lie down on the abdomen on the mat, while the back facing up. Keep the legs straight, arms on the side. The face should rest on the chin bone.
  2. Keep both the palms on the side of the shoulder. Make sure your keep a distance of one foot between both the feet.
  3. Inhale in and exhaling out slowly lifting your body on both feet and the palms. As you raise make sure your buttocks protrude out a little bit and your head goes down inside.
  4. Both the legs and the hands should be stiff and firm in this pose. It is very important to try to touch both the base of heals of the feet on the ground.
  5. Stay in the pose for few breathes. Keep on breathing in and out .Then slowly one can come out and may be doing again.
Cautions:
  1. It is very important to make sure that the heels touch the floor. For a beginner this would be very hard to do. But as you do it regularly one can easily do it.
  2. Make sure one keep the arms and the legs straight in the pose. No bends in this pose.
  3. Try to push your head more and more inward as you do this pose without moving both the legs and the hands .
Benefits:

  1. Nourishes the brain and neck area as this pose increases circulation to that area.
  2. Good to help relax the brain.
  3. Athletes, runners after some good work out on the field this pose helps then to relax easily.
  4. Good pose for those people who suffer with hypertension.
  5. Stiffness around the shoulder blades and the spine is reduced after doing this pose.
  6. Helpful pose for insomnia.
Chakra effect:

 Its known work is one the Manipur chakra or the solar plexus.

Pitta Prakruti

Last week we saw the Vatta Prakruti and all of characteristic of an individual’s whose constituent is Vatta. Today we would have a look on nature of the person who is govern by one of the tri dosha name as Fire or Pitta. The characteristic of the dosha does have a big impact on the nature of such individual for sure.

Pitta Prakruti and Physical feature

To understand a Pitta person is very easy in a group of people. A person who is attractive, one may say beautiful and also well known with his peers would be more likely is a Pitta person. These individuals are normally medium built, hairs which may be small, dark or be a little brown too, brown eyes or sometimes different colour.  Such individuals also tend to lose hairs quickly thus can be bald during early age of their life span. They do love the cold and hate the sun due to the heat in their own body.

Pitta Prakruti and the features of Mind
 
When it comes to know a person who is governed by Pitta dosha one should know that such person are known to be the kings in their world and no less. They are most loyal to their friends and most troublesome for their foes. Typical pitta individuals are also known for their short temper as they are known for their anger.  Such individuals although hated by few still are also very romantic when it comes to heart so they are a bit possessive.
Courageous adventurous, intelligent , daring are some of the adjectives that suits an pitta individual for sure.

Pitta Prakruti and Food Habits

As a king Pitta people are known for their indulgence in food and everything. Known to be ever hungry, pitta individuals do have a large appetite. Not just appetite they also have a very good digestive power as if to digest stone some say.
Such individual normally love to eat spicy food as compare to salty or sweet food in general. Rich exotic foods do definitely appeal such people for sure.

Health Issues of Pitta Prakruti

 It is the nature of the Pitta Prakruti to indulge as a king of what we know as pretty much over indulge rather than indulge. If they like spicy, they tend to over indulge, if they like alcohol they would drink more. Such habits tend to create health issues normally affecting the digestive tract of such persons.
Pitta prakurti individuals normally suffer with acidity at a very early age. If they over indulge in extravaganza they normally would face liver cirrhosis and issues with their kidneys.
Baldness is also one of the common health issues that such individuals may suffer at a very early age.
Stress also remains another major set of issue faced by such individuals. It is normally seen that such individuals do take lot of work at a time. Thus fulfillment of the said work remains a major issue creating stress.

Christams : Some Thoughts

Just two days away from the day of Christmas. Ohh I am sure each one us have  planned the whole day. Gifts, nice meal, get together with all friends and family. The same festive environment would be in each and every house hold. I had a terrible feeling not to post anything for today as many of you would be busy and enjoying. But as I was thinking about India and festivals , I decided to write a little bit of from the regular topics.
Here are some questions that I would like to ask by you to yourself and then decide how to enjoy this Christmas.
Art of Giving
I am sure you have bough many gifts for all your friends and family member this Christmas. Giving is something that is not that easy I am sure. During my early Child hood in India when it comes to festival the only thing that many families used to share with each other would be fun and happiness. I had friends who could not afford to exchange crazy gifts ... but still it was just the warm fun being with them that made our days. Sometimes it was just a cup of tea that would be shared with friends or some morsel of sweets. But it was worth the gift. It was the love that was really exchanged and nothing else.
 Can you enjoy a Christmas with giving love, happiness and fun rather than any gifts?{I love gifts myself let me be frank with you. Its not gifts that I am against .It is the thought and love that should be in those rather than just being a mechanical event that is my thought}
   The Art of Letting Go
Christmas, Thanksgiving Dinner are more remembered for different quarrels that one have with family members. Even during the whole year one may have grudges, differences with members of the family or even friends.
But can we forget all those and let it go this year?

 As a Health and life style expert I always have a question about how are festivals really can be connected to Health or healthy lifestyle.  They are all about different sweets and desserts and all the rich cuisines that one could think about. Gaining weight sometimes remains the main issue some times during such festivals.

 My thoughts ended with an answer that may be festivals are more to do with the mental health rather than physical health of Humans. Out of 365 days some days one ought to need to enjoy life, one needs to have fun and eat and forget all about diet and restrictions. May be festival are something to do with the Mind of the society. Giving and sharing joy, happiness and love with others all around us. Is this not what an healthy mind really requires.

So this Christmas enjoy with all different food and do not think about what idiots like me says on blogs about health. Give and share Joy if possible, forgive some one that you hold a grudge on and send a nice card. Let all those things that bother you disappear for a moment or two and enjoy life to the fullest.

Paripurna Navasana



 Boat Pose

Last week pose definitely confused few of my reader’s. I completely understand that. Many Yogic pose are a bit similar some times and often can be confused with the names especially the English translation of the Sanskrit names. Thus it is very important to keep the Sanskrit names and keep them in use, even after knowing its English translation some times. Hope it would be easy for one to use.

Today we would work on a pose which I think so I missed when we completed some of the sitting poses. "Paripurna Navasana"or the "Boat pose", the word "paripurna" means complete while "nava" means boat in Sanskrit .It is the formation of the body that one takes in this pose ;that looks like a boat which defines the name of the pose.

How to do it?

  1. Sit in a position where both the legs are straight in front and the spine kept straight. Arms kept on the side. This is a common beginner’s pose for many sitting poses like Paschimottanasana
  2. Inhale in and as one exhales slowly start leaning backward, and at the same time raise your legs above the surface as much as possible. Understand that the whole body weight would now be on your buttocks.
  3. Keep the whole position as stiff as possible to maintain the balance. Another thing to do is to keep your eyes fixed on the toes and maintain the pose.
  4. When you are set with the pose, slowly lift the hands from ground and bring it as parallel to the thighs as possible. This thus would represent the image of a boat with two oars which gives this pose the name Paripurna Navasana.
  5. Try to hold this pose for some time as possible . Start with couple of breathes to hold the pose and then as one practices daily increase the time span.

Caution:

  1. This pose those seems simple ,it is still advised that if one suffers with any issues with health do it with the help and guidance of an yoga expert.
  2. Spine realted health issues such as cervical spondylisis and others.. if one suffers with it should avoid doing this pose.
  3. The stiffness is very important to hold the balance in this pose . So make sure one is stiff enough...
  4. Lastly do not hold your breath when doing this pose.

Benefits :

  1.  Works excellent on abdomen.. especially on abdominal fats.
  2.  If suffering with bloating this would be the position to try to relive you from the trouble.
  3. Stimulates the kidney, intestines and all organs in the abdominal cavity.

Chakra effect :
 

This asana has its effects on "Svadhistana Chakra”.

Vatta Prakruti

Under the influence of each particular dosha during conception, one is said to see three major types of Prakruti.  If season, food and also the qualities of both sperm and ova favours for the Vatta dosha the person, would more likely be a Vatta Prakruti .

Physical features

Vatta or Vayu is one of the Mahabhoots that moves on its own of all five Mahabhoots.  Hence the property of movement would be first to be noticed when one looks for Vatta Prakruti.
Movements of physical body are the most prominent seen with this personality. Many time kids are often labelled because of such movements as Attention Deficit Disorder {ADD} kids.
Vata Prakruti individuals physical are more likely to be skinny. They tend to have long feet, long legs, long hands and also long hairs. They also tend to have rough, long hairs.
Because of the property of dryness or Ruksta of Vayu dosha, these individuals also tend to have dry and rough skin.

Mental Nature of a Vatta Individual:

Remember the word “Air headed individual”, we used to tease some of our friends in school. The reason we teased is because of the nature of that individual, especially of their brain. Movement governs them, thus vatta prakruti individuals even in the mental world are in constant motion. One moment they can be angry at some body, but soon they can be emotional. Very volatile in nature some times.
Less attention span, poor memory, but a very good grasp of new subjects is what attracts about them.
They are said to be manipulative, cunning and very shrewd some times for sure.

Food Habits:

 A Vatta individual loves to eat. They have very large appetite, but can be very changeable too. Some days they can eat like a pig, but some days they would not feel hungry at all. Thus they also face episodes of constipation some days too.
A Vatta individual loves to eat sweet, sour and salty food. They love to munch even after having a heavy meal. Individuals who are Vatta tend also to eat more than required some times.

Sleep:

 Because of constant thought process such individuals really have trouble falling asleep. Even if the eyes are closed such individuals tend to think constantly and it is very hard to shut their brains for a long time. Majority of people who are suffering with insomnia are Vatta individual.

Health Issues:

 As said due to diet, lifestyle such individuals tend to suffer from a very early age issues like constipation.
Another health issue that bothers such individuals is related to Bones. Many of these individuals do suffer with osteoarthritis; osteoporosis and other bone diseases sometimes even at an early age too.
Insomnia is very common too for such prakruti.

Snacks : Some Thoughts


Couple of days ago one of my RSS feed reader asked a question regarding eating snacks and what does Ayurveda think on that line. This post is dedicated to his questions for sure. Thanks a lot.

Normally one eats three meals a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. But there are times when one do eat or indulge in eating just pleasure or maybe because of hunger. Is this snacking healthy , is snacking good food healthy or just eating unhealthy food bad for one ?Are some the typical questions that jumbles a health savvy individual for sure. In my article on “Breakfast: Some Thoughts” I tried to answer some of the basic thoughts in regards to eating food and what Ayurveda has to say.

In this article we would try to understand possible criteria’s that would decide if eating snacks is healthy.


1] Eat only when you are really hungry:

According to Ayurveda one of the most important think that one should understand is that if you are hungry you are entitle to eat. It does happen sometimes that one even after eating lunch or dinner; we may feel hungry after some time. Try to hold that hunger for some and see, if not one can look for some healthy snack option.

2] Season and Hunger

Seasons do dominate our appetite what do you think? Have you notice that in winter one may eat a little more than usual while in summer’s our appetite decreases just because of water intake rather than food. According to Ayurveda winter being cold the body do consume a lot of energy thus one may need extra amount of food than normal .Thus snacking during the cold months is something what is OK.

3] Concept of Prakruti

Last week I just talked about this in one post, one of the best ways to understand prakruti is by the example of appetite. Have you noticed everyone on the breakfast table eating same? No it does not happen in that way. Some in the family would eat more, while some would eat or even skip. Prakruti or Nature has lot to do with how one is going to eat and digest food according to Ayurveda. Pitta prakruti individuals would be feeling hunger all the time, thus the chance of such individuals munching would be common. Try to restrict their munching and one could see some health issues arising too like headaches.

Looking through one can easily say that yes if one follow all these three gudielines eating snacks and lastly healthy snacks could be good for health. It is us to decide and understand our body, if one knows his or her body and follows we are on right tract.

Setu Bandhasana

The Bridge Pose

In today’s post on Yoga we are going to take a look on this particular asana which kind of a more for those who are doing it daily yoga or for a long time. Some poses though seem hard for an observer; still if one is doing yoga for a time seems not a big issue.


In Sanskrit the word “Setu” means a bridge, the word “Bandha” means lock. The whole pose resembles as if we create a bridge of our body connecting the head to the toes and then locks it there.

How to do the pose:

  1. Lie flat on the mat. Keep your legs straight, hands on the side of the ground, spine straight. Face looking upward.
  2. To start this pose, bend your knee and keep heals close to the buttocks as close as possible.
  3. Slowly inhale in and exhaling out slowly try to lift your tailbone while at the same time push your inner feet and arms down on the floor.
  4. Lift your buttock making sure our thighs are parallel to the floor. Make sure your pubis is closer to the navel.
  5. Firm the shoulder blades against your back. Firm the outer arms if possible in this pose. One may support the back with both arms as shown in the picture to lift the whole body a little more upward.
  6. Stay in this pose breathing in and out slowly as much as possible. Holding the pose for minimum of 4 breathes or more would be good to start with.

Caution:

  1. Typically all such bends one need to be extra careful if suffering with any spinal issues. Neck injuries for sure need to be extra careful. Doing such pose under expert guidance would be suggested.
  2. Students who do suffer with injuries or fractured wrist joint should not try this pose for sure.

Benefits:

  1. Good pose to stretch the whole body from base of the feet to the head. Especially for the spine.
  2. Rejuvenate our tired legs for sure.
  3. Increase appetite and also stimulates most of the abdominal organs and Lungs too.
  4. Good pose for those suffering with Osteoporosis, High blood pressure, sinusitis and lastly lungs.
  5. Also help to calm the brain and help those who face mild depression.

Prakruti : An Ayurvedic Concept

When it comes to Ayurveda in the recent world, one word that one may notice used all the times in news, in talks, in articles or even in books is the word called as Prakruti. The same word is seen as the bases of dealing with clients, the same word is used when dealing with healthy individuals. What is Prakruti any ways?

Prakruti [प्रकृ्ति]

Prakruti
means Constitution in its literal meaning. According to “Bhagavad Geeta” Prakruti means the basic nature of intelligence by which Universe exists and function. It is also the basic of all creation. Each and every thing in the universe does have a nature of itself. Say the nature of a tiger is to be ferocious, while that of a rabbit to be a little timid. In the same way each of us does have a nature of our own. And that nature is called as our Prakruti. Both the physical and the mental nature together are taken into consideration to understand them.

In Ayurveda Prakruti of an individual is divided in three major types namely the same three types of what Doshas are classified. Vatta ,Pitta, Kapha . Thus one may say Vatta Dosha and Vatta Prakruti, but still means a lot same and lot different at the same time.

How does a Prakruti of a Human defined?

Normally a prakruti of a person is defined during conception. The different cause that defines it is as follows:
  1. The quality of Sperms {Male}
  2. The quality of Ova {Female}
  3. Mother’s diet at the time of conception
  4. Season at the time of conception
  5. Mental state of both partners
All of the above things in combine do define the nature of the child born. And that is defined as the Prakruti of the child born.

Why to Understand Prakruti?

I keep that answer for some post later, till then just understand that knowing Prakruti one can be healthy and also treat the different health issues.

Can Prakruti be changed?

This remains one of most common question asked in regards to Prakruti to Vaidyas. Can that be changed? The answer is pretty clear no.....
Can a tiger change the nature to be ferocious, yes the tiger can be domesticated to some level, but still it will show sometimes the nature at some extent.

Natural Ways to Detox

Water

Today’s world as we all know is full of pollutants and chemicals, air pollutants, noise pollutants, water pollutants . Our food that we eat too if not polluted is subjected to various chemicals which may or may not have any long term hazards on our body. The human body do have a way to throw out such unwanted crap . Our execratory system with the help of organs like liver, lungs and kidneys work nonstop to keep our body healthy. Still one is well aware that it takes a toll on our body. Health conditions like fatigue, migraines, nausea and many more do occur on and off with no reasons what so ever.

More and more health savvy individuals are looking for ways to eliminate such wastes from our body easily thus looking for different types of detoxification programs. Hydro colon therapies, Apple fast, Master cleanse are some of the well known out of all. One is aware that such types of diet or fasting do require lot of patience and also lot of money in some conditions too. One always wonder any way to keep healthy and also detox sometimes just with the help of simple things in daily life.

Water Detox
According to Naturopathic Medicine one of the best ways to cleanse one’s body is my drinking water. Drinking water for days or also called as water fast is a common way of cleaning one’s body. I was lucky in my career to see both success of this type of fasting and also some of the known hazards of such fasting. Thus when referring to water as a way of detoxification, I tried to see what Ayurveda has to say on it .

According to the Science of Living called as Ayurveda, Water does have many properties and one of them is to cleanse and also nourish. But the magic of water is not in using it just plain. To nourish cold water really quenches one’s thirst, but for detoxification one needs a different set of rules for water.
Hot Water /Warm Water
I know I kept you wondering why hot water as compared to regular water what is the difference. Let me explain you more clearly with this example. After finishing a nice meal when it comes to wash oily dishes what would one normally do. It is simple just start some warm water and then apply detergent and its clean. Now before cleansing it warm water try to use cold water. One could see the difference easily. Understand that warm water in Ayurveda is said to be the real detoxifier. It has the magic property to go in our system and as we clean our dishes after meal, this water goes and cleans our gut properly.
One does not need to take this more than one glass as even just one or two glass here and there can make a huge difference in everyday cleansing. No need for fasting, no headaches, no nausea and no extra money too for such detox method. One’s health is assure if each day such simple ways of detoxification. What do you say? Welcome to my 101 post on this blog. Yes yesterday’s post on Chaturanga Dandasana was my 100th post to be submitted since April 2009. It has been a great pleasure to work on this page. Last week we learned about Dhanurasana or the Bow pose. I understand that it might not be that easy to do that pose. But well Practice makes man Perfect. Don’t you think? So do those pose every time, slowly and slowly one would be the masters of those poses. Today we would learn about a simple pose called as Chaturanga Danadasana also called as The Four Limbed Staff pose.

The word “Chatur” means four, while “anga” means limbs of the body, “Danada” means a staff. The whole pose represent one on all the four limbs of the body and keeping it as stiff as a staff or “Danada” ,thus the name in Sanskrit “Chaturanga Danadasana” .

How to Do the pose:
  1. Lie flat on the floor [mat] face downwards, spine straight, both the limbs straight, arms apart from the body, but on the side of the body.
  2. Now before doing the pose, bend the elbows and place the palms on the side, by the side of the chest. Both the feet should be around foot apart from each other.
  3. Slowly inhale in and then exhaling out slowly lift the whole body on the palms and the toes of the body. Make sure that the whole body should be as stiff as a stick or danda. The body now is parallel to the floor only touching to the ground on your palms and the toes.
  4. Slowly extend the whole body a little forward so that the tips of the toes bear all the body weight.
  5. Stay in that pose for a while .One may repeat this again for some more times.

Caution:
  1. This pose is challenging, thus perform this pose only after you have attained certain stage of yoga class.
  2. If you have issue with your wrist like old fracture, please do this exercise only under expert guidance.
  3. Carpel Tunnel syndrome and pregnancy are two condtions when one should not do this pose.
Benefits:
  • Strengthen the arms and the wrists.
  • Develop mobility and power to the arms.
  • Tones the abdominal organs.

Kapha Imbalance : Causes

In last week’s we did peek of all the causes of Vatta dosha & Pitta dosha imbalance. Understating them properly, we now move on to the next and the most important one. It is said that most of the different health issues arising in the 21 centenary are seen due to Kapha Imbalance. Hence it is very important for us to have a proper idea of their causes.

Causes of Kapha Imbalance:

Diet :

Diet according to Ayurveda is such a thing that it can either create a balance in our dosha, or it can create an imbalance. We have seen in other two dosha, how different food items have influenced the dosha.

  • Excess Milk Products: Most of the developed countries love their intake of milk, butter, cheese and many things that revolve around milk products. It is when these products that one tends to intake more than required one might see an imbalance of Kapha dosha. Cheese being the number one culprit in that list is also the most favored here.
  • Excess Fats: Fats just do not mean fats from butter and cheese or oil, but I also means animals fats. Increasing amount of bacon, pork, chicken and lamb products which do contain excess fats in general are seriously bothering one's kapha dosha.
  • Fruits: One might question how come fruits creates imbalance. Well fresh fruits are health again in moderation and if eaten with seasonally. Unluckily in most developed countries one can get all types of fruits 24/7. One more thing that we humans tend to do is freezing certain food and then eat then frozen which is bound to create an imbalance of kapha dosha.

Life style:
  • Eating style: Many people do have a habit to munch or eat little here and there rather than eating properly at given times. Munching as a habit is good, but unluckily the snacks that one chooses for munching if are chosen wrongly like chips, cheeses crackers or even pastries. One is bound to see imbalance of kapha dosha.
  • Lack of Exercise: This is one of another reason for an imbalance of kapha dosha, lack of exercise. Either laziness or just boredom makes one person forget about exercising daily thus showing the imbalance.
  • Late night snacking : One may find this very common in developed countries as compared to the third world .But it is true, late night snacking especially if one eats junk like cakes and pastries or even chips or popcorn with cheese and stuff is bound to have an imbalance of kapha dosha .
  • Video games /X-Box, Computers : Recent years another trend that one can see with imbalance of kapha dosha due to different modern equipments likes computers, video games and X-Box. Many kids tend to devote a huge amount of time to such games thus being very sedentary during the whole day. Also one tends to eat a lot of junk while actually participating in such activities creating more trouble.
Season:
  • Spring Season: Winter season is what one may thing that can bring imbalance of Kapha dosha, but it is not. It is spring that would bring the maximum imbalance of the kapha dosha. One may see many issues like cold and sinus issues troubling more and more people during that time.
  • Morning: During the 24 hrs day’s cycle it is the mornings or the Brahma muhurta that are said to be governed by this imbalance of kapha dosha. Thus one needs to be active during the morning; laziness during these hours can create the desired imbalance of kapha.

Salt : Too little or Too Much


French fries one of the favorite snacks all around the world thanks to the fast food companies that have made them so popular. This same fries are what shocked me recently. The amount of extra salt that some people add to this fries was what bothered me. Salt to me is to be taken just a sprinkle here and there. Unluckily we humans have now been indulging in lot of salt these days. Here is a quick example of our salt in our meal table:

A cup of all bran cereal : 620 milligrams of salt
Bagels: 400-500milligrams of salt
Toast : 140-200 milligrams of salt
Cheese [one inch cube]: 400 milligrams
Butter 2 tsp: 25 milligrams


Just for breakfast a normal person without adding any added salt can eat around 1 to 2gms of salt easily. While recently in WHO clearly stated in its website that the average salt intake has to be less that 5 gms of salt per day for every human being. Yes one is right to say that some of us are eating excessive salt in diet. Here is little trouble that one might look at due to eating excessive salt.

According to Ayurveda excessive salt do result in certain health issues in every person. The chief result that one can see is impotency or issues relating to fertility. Baldness, fatigue and different types of skin diseases can also be seen with those who eat more salt.

Different scientific studies do have found co-relation with excess salt intake with different health hazards too.

  • Hypertension and Salt: Studies in different parts of the world have shown the same result with the links of excess salt intake and increasing cause of high blood pressure in individuals. Studies also confirm that as one reduces salt intake, sees notable changes in blood pressure. A recent study shows that an extra tea spoon of salt also heightens the risk of stroke by 23 percent.
  • Salt and Osteoporosis: BBC in one of the articles covered this topic showing studies by team of scientist who related excess salt intake and increasing chances of Osteoporosis.
  • Many other diseases are linked and have seen being connected with increasing salt intake diet such as gout, gastric ulcers and cancer, duodenal cancer and ulcer.
If here are some the issues caused by excess salt, I had few chances to see different patients who have trouble because reduce salt too. Muscle cramps one of the best example to show is result of decrease sodium in our muscles some time.

What I do not understand is why humans tend to always to do extremes. Either no salt or added salt ... why not just moderate. Gina my friend in her article Fats: Pros and Cons properly quote “that one need to eat as natural as possible to eliminate the doubt of excess fats”. Which remain so true in the case of salt intake too? The more process, preserved one eats the more salt they eat. Eat fresh and less would be your salt intake.
