Health blogs are currently busy working on keeping us all on bay with regards to Swine Flu.The actual know how about Swine Flu has preceded a lot than its actual influence on our life.With such nasty , dreaded news all over the news columns , making you just fear for your life . Just for change i thought to go through such news that might be positive and make your day . Such health news that could have been missed . So a quick peek in few News papers for our health .

No Gain without Pain:

Recent studies have found that if you are a pregnant having nausea and morning sickness , you would have gr8 chances of having a baby who has a higher I.Q .The Journal of Pediatrics reported that those mothers having no such symptoms , their kids lack that I.Q as compared to the first group.

2] Longer life you need not Vitamins but Friends :

Older people having many friends were less likely to die than those with fewer friends. A 10 year Australian research study came upon this conclusion recently. Survival rate for individuals suffering from cancer , AIDS, and other disease do affects if they have a larger friend circle. Same conclusion were reached with younger group of adults between 30 -50 age group . Well who need Vitamins, supplements now . Just have many friends.

3] Obama Administration and increase appeal for Medical Marijuana.

Since the Obama Administration in United States ,a sudden increase of people using Medical Marijuana increased .Is it the stance that the current administration has taken of not interfering in each states affair or just the economic chaos that may have caused many people in America go without Health insurance and now running for alternatives.It would be worth watch what happen with this story .

4] Age and Memory no connection:

Researchers have concluded that age has nothing to do with losing ones memory . We have always blamed one's age for forgetting .That's not what the scientist are saying .If we think in the possiblity of having great memory we would have .Its all the mind set , that was was concluded in that research .

Swine Flu : Preventing with help of Ayurveda


All of sudden during this weekend the world especially North America was in shock with another pandemic lurking over it shore . Just it was few months ago when news paper stop having columns regarding the Avian Flu . And now it is all of sudden a new type of flu which some what like Avian flu namely "The Swine Flu". Swine Flu" its a disease of the Pigs and in some cases also affecting the humans who are in contact with the animals .The World Health Organization has reported on its website many cases in Mexico and United States . Even Canada yesterday announced that it is suspecting few cases been affected too .What we know that it is an viral infection of type A influence virus present in pigs. Infection with humana with this type is uncommon unless for those people who work and live closely with pigs can be affected.It normally affects the upper respiratory tract and its symptoms are similar to those of a Human Influenza .Fever with chill , cold, sore throat, aching limbs, headaches and general malaise .Some reports have been recording few cases of vomiting and diarrhea .
Normal line of action by the medical world is to give a drug called Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and Zanamivir (Relenza) .No vaccines have yet been found on this condition.

Steps taken to protect yourself and your family member from this flu:
1] Cover your mouth when coughing all the time
2] Wash hand regularly in an alcohol based cleaner .
3] Avoid any close contact with any sick person suffering from cold , cough
4] Yes you can still eat pork .{ i do disagree } .

Ayurveda and Swine Flu:
For the branch of Ayurveda , epidemics of such nature were not that uncommon .Emphasis is given on the immunity of the people staying in the affected area and surroundings . With regards to taking any special herbs or any decotion its all to work on the increasing the immunity of the peoples .Because the whole idea that Ayurveda promotes is if your immune system is strong , even if you are exposed to such viruses ,it would not affect you . Immunity will help us protect us from those viruses .
So the point is how to keep an healthy immunity .Many blogs have been advising people to start taking Vitamin D and differant mineral combination.
Here are the few things that you can thing of doing to protecting yourself and your family members and friends :

1] Ginger , Ginger , Ginger .....
Hey yes the same spice ginger that you get with your sushi { pickeled one} ,just use it raw can be an excellent way to protect yourself and boosting your immunity . Ginger has been known to fight different flu. cold ,fever condition . Not only that its good for inflamtion and in an healthy person just protects you from any infection from bothering you .
Ginger Tea:
1 cup of water
few Freshly sliced Ginger Root or dried ginger powder
Boil them together for 1 minute and then brew it in your cup.may add brwon sugar or molasses
Have this yummy spiced tea once a day and it would work magic.

2] Garlic:
Yes the vampire repellent . Garlic has this unusual property due to its obnoxious smell to repel off bacteria and viruses .Its has been known that garlic is an powerful natural antibiotic . So yes do have some sliced Garlic clove in your diet .Ohhh do not eat it raw .... please make sure you either stir fry it a little bit before you eat.

3] Amala{ Indian Gooseberry} : Embilica Officanales
One of the greatest fruits know to boost once immune system as properly names as the best to work in such type of conditions .We in the west may not be actually knowing this fruit properly but we do know it as a small constituent of the Jam named Chayavanprash . Many Ayurvedic websites and blogs have promoted this product as the best immune booster .Yes this fruit can help us a lot in this situation in boosting our health . A spoonful of Chayavanprash might do the magic in giving you the protection that might be needed to fight having this viruses .

4] Camphor:
Have you been aware of this herb before ... if not .. its nothing internal that you need to do . If you know a place were to buy aromatherapy oil , just purchase some Camphor oil and burn in it in your room , office a slight camphor oil all the time. Camphor again has its won property of keeping different air borne diseases .

This are the few main herbs to be used . Their can be a tons and tons of such herbs that can help you in preventing yourself from this Swine flu .Quick example : Basil, Sage, Orgeona , Elderberry , Burdock ,Yarrow. Please do visit your friendly herbologist or Vaidya before you take any of this herbs, just for your own benefit .Another warning for all you Fear is the last thing that you wanted to be in ... So be fearless and you can win all the epidemics.Stop the typical fear mentality .
Again the object of writing this post is not to treat the original condition , but this is the basic step that we all can take in preventing it happening it in our backyard " Prevention is always better than Cure " Do not you agree .Of course if you are ill with any of this conditions described ,do visit your near by doctor and let me know .In such epidemics its the duty of every citizen to report such cases to the government .

5 ways to save on our Vitamins Bill every Month

Recently I read an interesting article on Vitamins and their lack of providing the adequate support in the
current health scenario.New York times reported how even after taking vitamins everyday , their is lack of proper scientific evidence on if they can prevent cholesterol issues or when used to protect good cells , they do in a way also protect the bad cancerous cells in the body too. Can you imagine that we spend around 50 bucks per month or more just on those pills to keep us healthy as preventative.Is it worth the amount we spend on this pills .Well i know the discovery of this vitamins were made to save our lives and keep us healthy , then what is going wrong on that lines .

Another concern that the I always had is the need of this vitamins pills . I have kept this notion that this pills are more for the Third world countries were balanced meal is a luxury for half the people . For them this pills were life savers .Unluckily the original market were this pills are used in not in the Third world but in the first world .Were food is balanced rather abundant. What is wrong then .I tried to look out in diet pattern and lifestyles of individuals from all over the world were i found out few of the main reasons why The First world citizens do need this pills too ..

1] Highly processed food.
2] Fast food
3] Frozen dinners or snacks
4] Genetically modified food
5] Stress full life style
6]High Alcohol , smoking rate .

Well knowing the fact that this pills are not workingin a way they are supposed to work what can be golden rule to follow to remain healthy and protect ourself even in this conditions .Yes but without spending so much on this pills .


A] Eat Fresh , Eat Local :
Eat Fresh , Eat Local that is the Mantra of Good Health .Trying to eat fresh local food would help you get all the nourishment you need.According to ancient science of Ayurveda food that grow around your area gives the most nourishment that we need to fight all the disease. Ok staying in New city how would be that feasible ... you can eat some thing around by ." The 100 Mile Diet " would give you a nice idea of what i meant and how to work on that . Give it a try


B] Eat Seasonal :
Isn't it scary .. yes but we do eat a lot of food that is not at all seasonal Apples they are grown and harvested in September October .. hey well we eat any time of the year.
How come .. simple they are frozen in lots and then supplied or they are supplied around the world in what is required . Mangoes do not grow in Canada but still
we eat them all year around .Yes the price fluctuates .. notice that ..
Seasonal food have all the nourishment that your body needed to fight that time of the year .So look out more often for that farmer's market than any grocery store another reason to do that .

C] Eat Balanced Meal:
I have seen many times that people do over eat one sort of group a lot . If they like bread , its just what they would eat all day . The whole Idea of Balanced meal made by World Health Organisation { WHO} is all about giving you all this vitamins , minerals and the other nutrients needed for your body .Try to eat few carbohydrates, few leafy vegetable, if needed few eggs, meat products , some fats , some fruits , some milk products . This might look more balanced that just eating meat and potato .

D] Follow Mother Nature:
We just celebrated Earth Day , many people made different resolutions in their life on this Earth day . When it comes to food cannot we also follow the way Mother Nature wants us to .It gives fresh fruits when its hot in the summer to cool us off . And then we get an harvest of peanuts , yams , potato more near the winter time to give us the required heat . Does not it make sense to follow what is in our plate during those months rather than eating every thing all time , any season .

E] Grow your own garden :
Spring is around why not think of growing your own garden fresh vegetables , salads .Cost effective and a making a garden could be a gr8 exercise for your mind too .If you do not have space why not work with few friends together in a small patch to harvest nice lettuce , spinach , and fresh vegetables . Saves money on groceries right .



Yes I agree that their are few incidence were you might need to take Vitamins for a while so , but please try not to just have this habit of popping those pills often .Well eager to read your comments .

About Me !!


Welcome to "e-swastya" !! The person you are looking on the side is me alias Sudeep A Chitnis a citizen of India, currently living in Canada. I started my career as an Ayurvedic Vaidya or Doctor, but here I am more like a health blogger for you. I believe my passion is Ayurveda more than anything else. I live, eat drink and even sleep Ayurveda sometimes those are my pros and cons.

Why the need of a blog ?

As a traditional Indian Orthodox boy I did not miss to notice the difference in the society in the western world especially Canada and United States. There was a growing need of the society to stay healthy and look for something else than just the regular system of medicine. This need was being satisfied by many advocates of health in different ways. For lay man it was kind of confusing. Whom should they follow, is this right or this wrong advice. Many of my clients questioned me. To be truth full even for me it was a little confusing.  Solving those questions, I took refuge to the fundamentals of Ayurveda, the science that has been since 5000 yrs old. Here I did get my answers, though they were hard to explain to my clientele.
The main inspiration for this blog has been those questions asked by all my clients in North America.

What is e- swastya ?

The word “Swastya” means Health in Sanskrit. One of the oldest languages spoken and written Sanskrit is the base of different Ayurvedic text.  Ancient wisdom of living applied to the current scenario makes this blog a unique union of old and the new. So we name the blog as “e-swastya”.

Why one should join and subscribe e-swastya?

“e-swastya” shares the same goal of Ayurveda that is working for keeping every one healthy. Helping those who face some health issues would also kept in mind. In this blog I would be writing many thoughts on different health issues which are often confused say for example, Breakfast: Is it must to eat or not? Also we have a section of yoga and different asanas to read. And some posts to understand some of the basic principles of Ayurveda.
We are open for thoughts and question on any topic, if you are confused feel free to fill the contact us form. If we can answer we would even answer in a form of an article.
