Decreased Pitta : Signs and Symptoms :

Last week we had a chance to see how it affects our body when Vatta Doshas gets depleted in the body, due many reason. I am sure it’s very rare to see certain signs and symptoms. But still they are worth knowing.

In today's Post we would try to have a look on how our body reacts to decreased “Pitta Dosha”. Of course one should be aware that Pitta related to fire or energy or heat in the body .So Let us see what happens if Pitta is reduced.

Pitta Dosha Reduced:

1] “Agni Manda” :

When understanding Pitta dosha and its role in the body, it’s easy now to understand that, if anything happens to pitta it would directly affect the digestive fire of the body. "Agni Manda" or decreases digestive fire is the first sign that one would notice when Pitta dosha in the body gets reduced. Decreased digestive fire means less hunger or less appetite in lay man’s world.

2] “Sheet”:

Now decreased hunger also means in the long run less body fuel and thus once body would be devoid of body heat which is normally derived from the food eaten .Thus it’s also common to find due to less agni madya a person “sheet" which means cold.

3] “Prabhahani” :

Each one of us has a glow on our face. According to Ayurveda this glow is because of the Pitta dosha. The Sanskrit word for glow here is "prabha" .Due to decrease pitta one could see that one would loss this glow on one's face. Remember the days when you are sick just for one day or so ... you face been sunken and everyone says you seems sick even without you telling them. This is because of decreased pitta and thus this glow reduces as it has been there because of Pitta dosha. Any long term illness one would find this symptom very common, but again in all chronic illness one would also find decreased appetite as one of the cause too.

Goal Setting

Do you want to be healthier? Would you like to lose weight? Do you have a desire to be more flexible, to be more toned, and to have an increased cardiovascular endurance? What about a sharper mind? Whatever your desires and wishes are, it is very important that you translate them into goals.

According to a goal is “a specific, measurable occurrence, object, or accomplishment that you would like to achieve, or obtain in the future. Goals are future actions where you develop concrete action plans to take you to where and to what you want in my future. It is said that many people confuse dreams and wishes with goals. While dreams and wishes may be interchangeable, dreams and wishes are not interchangeable with goals. Dreams and wishes are thoughts of the future without any plan or any concrete steps taken to realize them.

You don’t have to have any goals; but lacking goals is a good way of living a directionless life. In other words, you have two broad choices in life: You can set a direct course for your future by defining and setting your goals or you can just let the future unfold by itself. While the latter is a proces
s that permits many potential discoveries, it is also a very unfocused life and a way to guarantee that you never reach whatever destination you have or that you will never achieve what you desire. According to, there are five reasons why a person should set goals. These would include:

• Goals can give you a target to aim for;
• Goals can help you concentrate your time and effort;
• Goals can provide motivation, persistence and desire;
• Goals
can help you establish priorities;
• Goals can provide a road map to take you from where you are to where you want to be;
Whatever your reason, it is clear that a life without goals is a life unfulfilled, or so the saying goals.

Ok, now that you understand the necessity of having/setting goals, the next question is how you go about setting them. It is said that goal setting is about identifying something that you would like to achieve at some point in the future; you should also:

• Determine if it is realistic and attainable;
• Set a time line for its achievement;
• List the actions that must be taken to reach the goal;
• List th
e major milestones;
• Identify the resources (what you will need to have);
• Put together the action plan;

After you have set your goals, the next step is to execute them. That is to perform the steps listed in the action plan. A goal with steps not acted upon is nothing more than a dream, a wish. Secondly, you need to periodically monitor if you are on or off track reaching your goal; thirdly, you should check the milestones. Finally, you should make the necessary adjustments if you find that you or off course.

What should I do if I have not achieved my goal by the time line? Do I simply discard the goal? I believe that many people give up when they encounter some obstacles along the way or when challenge either from a time or resources basis, they throw in the towel. They simple discard the goal de
spite the level of investment in setting the goal in the first place. It is critical that you resist the urge to give up and instead take stock of where you are now, and what addition steps do you need to take to attain your goal.

No matter what your goal is, fitness, health, wealth loss, mindfulness, stronger muscles, toner body, more flexible, etc… you will serve yourself well, if you follow the steps outline above. I am sure that some might disagree with my line of reasoning, and that is ok. I would love, however, to understand your methodology if you do disagree. So, do share!

Baddha Konasana

Cobbler's Pose /Butterfly Position :

In our series of Yoga and its understanding, we come to another interesting position or asana which has its benefits known to the world for many conditions. As I said long time ago some of the positions that we do , try to mimic different animals or nature, or even humans in any profession .It’s the benefit that one could see in such pose over the time that Yoga has taken such positions into consideration to work for being Healthy and keeping the world Healthy.

In today's article we should see on such position that resembles a huge community in India namely called as Cobbler .Also known as Cobbler's pose this position in Sanskrit is known as "Baddha Konasana"."Badda "means restricted and by now one should know "Kona" means angle. Restricted Angle asana... would be the meaning of the word . Then what is it to do with Cobbler in India. All the Cobblers do seat in this position all the day for their occupation .It has been seen due to such style a lot of health issues are not seen in that class of citizen for generations .This has been attributed to pose they sit in.

How to do this position?

1] Sit on the floor with legs stretched in front. Back erect, spine erect, face looking forward .
2] Bend both your knees and bring them closer to the trunk.
3] By bringing the soles of the heels together, let the outer surface of the feet touch each other. By catching the toes bring both the feet together and closer to the perineum.
4] Slowly if possible widen the thighs and lower the knees.
5] Try to touch the knees to the ground.
6] Now interlock your fingers of the hand and catching the feet’s from underneath hold the feet’s. Make sure your spine is straight, neck straight. Hold the pose in that position for at least 2 to 3 minutes.

Advance stage:

7] Now if possible slowly bend forward, placing the elbow on the thighs. Make sure you bend slowly; our goal here is to touch the chin to the floor without lifting the thighs from the ground.
8] Let your body inhale and exhale as you feel when doing the position.
9] Coming back relax your legs for a while to two before moving for another exercise.


1] Again as in most asanas make sure one is careful while bending if one suffers from High blood pressure or any cardiac problems.
2] While doing the asanas , make sure one is slow and careful . Being quick is not what is called for in any yogic asanas .Being in the present is what is required.
3] Avoid this asanas if menstruating or do it with the help of a proper teacher during those days .


1] It is through observation that cobblers in India do not suffer every from any Urinary tract diseases, makes it clear that this position works really well in preventing from all sorts of UTI.
2] Increase blood flow and chi flow towards the pelvic region, abdomen, kidney’s is what it counts for.
3] Works well in helping a client from sciatic pain.
4] Prevents Hernia, if practiced regularly.
5] Works really well with women’s especially for irregular menstrual cycle , helps ovaries to function properly.
6] Its a blessing for pregnant women’s as sitting in this pose reduces the pain during delivery , and reduces the chances of having varicose veins after pregnancy .


This asana has its effects on "Svadhistana Chakra”.

Decreased Vatta : Signs and Symptoms

For the last few weeks we had a chance to see how different doshas when increases way up from their normal values in an individual immediately show some signs or symptoms. The signs and symptoms seen normally are related to the different properties of each doshas. From today we would try to have a look on how if the same doshas decreased, what happens with the properties and how does it matters on our human body .The signs and symptoms that are see when each of this doshas decreased is what we would be discussing with if possible some explanation to why that is how ?

Vatta the dosha which represents motivation in the human body, also known as the Vayu dosha , with its ability to constantly make a matter move ,change according to the conditions it is around. Let us see what happens when because of different reasons this same vayu dosha is decreased.

1] "Alpavachana " :

To speak less or barely, minimize speech or what is called in Sanskrit "Alpha vachana" . Understand that the ability of speech in our body is the work of Vayu dosha . If this dosha has been decreased due to many reasons, one would look for less speak from any person. Being dumb or barely speaking anything, is how one look at this sign .

2] "Alpa chesta":

"Alpa chesta" means in English to hardly move or reduce movement. Again as spoken before that Vayu dosha has been seen as the motivator of anything in our body. If this motivator has been reduced, one would understand that one would face reduced movements may be of thoughts or even action both ways one can say. That is what is Alpha chesta in Sanksrit .

3] "Sandhyamoha":

This one symptom of reduced Vayu dosha is the most advanced that one can say and find. "Sandhyamoha " literal lay man word means unconscious or comatose stage. In this stage one could not find hardly any physical, movements nor any speech from the mouth of the person affected. The thinking area of the brain is also hampered. Though the heart beats, respiration may go one, still the stage as equal to a role of flesh for some moment of time.

Also one could find because of Vayu dosha decrease signs like less appetite, less energy, less vigor and so on and on. One need the leader of all the dosha to actually motivate the other doshas too, thus one could see disturbance in other dosha soon or enough.

10 Tips for this Comming Season : Winter

Soon in many sectors of North America many would have started feeling cool, winds flowing with full force. In Canada we are still in between fall and winter, some days are cool as hell and some days its warm and humid with rain. My wife just moved to Canada and thus this is here first winter in Canada. Seeing her apathy how she faces the cold winter, I thought so it might be nice to write something that everyone can follow to face this cold winter .Here are 10 pointers that one can follow to have a great winter.

Nutrition /Food:

Food has always been a way in Ayurveda that has been suggested to help humans face the upcoming weather. Thus many times as seasons change Ayurveda advises for change in food. Here are some of the changes recommended.

1] Ginger tea:
This magnificent spice has been mention in many of my article. Most of friend says to me that you are just in love with this spice .But it’s not just me even in the world of Ayurveda this spice is regarded as the spice of the spice .Ginger known for its heat that it gives when ingested is the reason that one is recommended to drink this herb in a form of tea. Have at least two or three cups of tea to keep warm.

2] Some Asian spices:
Other Asian spices like black pepper ,cayenne pepper are also known for its heating properties. So yes definitely they could be used for sure why not. Add some to your food, some to what you are cooking .Even in small amounts can make a huge different. Try it...

3] Chicken/Turkey/Eggs:
Well you are lucky if you are non vegetarian. Yes in most of the European nation and the North American countries Turkey on thanksgiving and Christmas is the routine of the winter season. Yes both this meat products are actually helping you to keep you well protected during those cold days. Even eggs are nice on that lines. So if you eat them why not have more of them on cold days .

4] Peanuts, Almonds /Hazelnuts:
You would be wondering if you are vegetarian then what to do? Well do not worry; we have some answers for that too. Peanuts, almonds and all the nuts in the nuts family are for you. All this nuts have oil in them which in due way help one to produce body heat which is very important for keeping the body warm. Use them as snacks and see the results .

5] Eat and then go out:
Well this is something off the way advice that I would like to give. Eat and then go out. It’s clear if you are hungry you would feel the coolness, as your stomach is empty. But if you have eaten you have enough blood supply flowing that your body to keep your body warm. Notice that when you go in restaurant one may feel cold, but when coming out, the temperature even if its cold one is fine with it.

Life style adjustments:

As food is important to changing season so are our lifestyle needs to be change to get ready for the cold season .Here are some tips on that lines .

1] Have a nice massage:
One of the important health advices that Ayurveda gives with change in season is to massage oneself with sesame seed oil. This is what is called as Abyanga . I have written about this before in one of the article before. Have a peek to here. Sesame seed oil due to its nature to heat the body works as a heat insulator and thus protects oneself even after shower in the winter season.

2] Nasya drops:
Another from my past post .Read this post too here .Nasya is the way one certain herbs or oil are given through one's nasal passage in the body. In this case we are going to use certain herbal oil or even sesame seed oil. Again here the point is to protect our lungs from the cold air and thus protecting our self from coolness.

3] Dress properly:
Well everyone knows that in winter one need to dress well .I am not speaking about just dressing properly here .I am speaking about dressing some specific area properly . First and foremost make sure your ears are close if I it’s very very cold and windy. Get a nice cap or toque to protect your ears. Even small ear buds may help you. Secondly small muffler around your neck would be also advisable, notice when you cover your neck, it keeps you warm. Check that out. And lastly keep your feet’s and hands warm all the time. Gloves, socks may be ideal in this situation.

4] Go for a walk:
Walk; do not sit on your ass!!! It’s cold and countries like Canada you would find depression developing soon if you just sit in your house. It’s very important to make sure one constantly exercise every day .If not just dress properly and go out for walk .That might help you a lot .

5] Apply some warm oil on your feet:
If it’s too cold ,just before one sleep apply just warm oil on the feet . That might keep you warm. Try it and enjoy your winter

Upavista Konasana

The Straddle /Wide angle seated position

Welcome again to another Monday with Yoga 101 . As we advance further one may find certain asanas to be difficult and not that easy to perform .But understand that it’s the effort one put in such asanas what counts in the end. The exact position may be reached may be after few years of practice .To do as perfect as possible is the goal here.

In today's article we would see one more asana in sitting position called as "Upavista Konasana ", also known as the "Wide angle seated Forward bend ".Also known as The Straddle position. The word "Upavista " means seated and as seen before "Kona" means angle in Sanskrit .

How to do it?

1] Sit on the floor with legs stretched straight in front. Spine straight, head straight .Eyes fixed on the toes.
2] Now slowly widen the distance between both legs slowly as much as one can do .As we keep both the legs stretched in extension, make sure that our back of the leg is touching the ground and not lifted.
3] Keep both the hands in front of your body on the ground.
4] Inhale in and exhaling lean forward with spine straight, eyes fixed. Let your hands walk the ground as one lean forward .Make sure you keep the body weight eventually disturbed.
5] If possible try to let your nose touch the ground.
6] Hold the position for at least one to 2 min in the beginning or more in the further stage .

For experts:
7] For experts one may want to hold with both hands each toes of each leg and then bend down so one can touch the nose to the ground.


1] Its very important that you be very careful while bending.
2] Also make sure as said before the back of the legs need to be always in touch with the floor. No
lifting of the legs while doing the position for comfort .
3] Concentrate on breathing in and out might help you to reach your destiny in this position.
4] Be careful if one has heart problems or high blood pressure.


1] A really good stretch for the hamstrings.
2] Increases the blood flow towards the pelvic region.
3] In doing so it’s a good preventative measure for prevention of Hernia growth.
4] Doing this asana for women’s, help them to regularize the menstrual flow .Also does stimulate the ovaries in the long run.
5] Increase flexibility to the inner thighs, mobility to the hip joints and strengthens the back.

Chakara effect:
This asana has its effects on "Svadhistana Chakra”.

Dhanvantari Jayanti

Shri Dhanvantari, Divine Founder of Ayurveda

In whose heart shines a subtle, clear, gentle, and pleasing blaze of light that also shines around his head and lotus eyes. On the dark blue water his body is luminous, splendid, and shining. His waist and thighs are abounding in bright yellow clothes. Who, by his mere play, destroys all disease like a mighty forest fire. Om Dhanvantaraye Namah"*

All over the world Ayurvedic Community celebrated "Lord Dhanavantri Jayanti" yesterday. Ayurveda being a part of the ancient Vedas has from time being a very spiritual science .The actual origin of this science is said from Lord Brahma the creator who first created this science. This has been a story from the Hindu Mythology .But it has been said that Brahma taught this science to Prajapati , who then taught it too Ashwini kumars{the divine healers} so on and on.
It is said that when the human race during those years were suffering due to diseases, it was Lord Vishnu himself, who came in the world as "Lord Dhavantari" during the great Samudra Mantan .
Stories apart, but even in history Dhanavantri has been a name attached to a great Vaidya . He was well known for his skills as a Vaidya, especially in the department of surgery. If you wanted to learn surgery in Ayurveda, you ought to read the ancient script of Acharya Sushrutha called "Sushrutha Samhita" . It is said that Acharya Sushruta learned his skills in surgery from Lord Dhanavantari .

Spirituality /Religion nothing matters when it comes in the matter of life and death, we all know. Even so in my early years of training in Ayurveda our zeal for spirituality or religious studies was nothing or even may call it a big zero. It’s funny as I recollect, it was not just me, but most of my friends, as days, months, years pass one could easily notice the existence of spirituality increased as we studied Ayurveda. It really does not matter which religion we practised, but it mattered how much was our spiritual awakening for sure .Now when as we try to heal our clients, help them, the more we help them the more we realize, that it’s not me or us treating , its them helping themselves. The thoughts that arise in our minds to heal the suffering are all HIS creations .And without him our science, our know-how of all this science is just a waste.

Today on this occasion we always pray to "Lord Dhanavantri" to help us to sustain our ego and keep in control. In doing so we can at least be helpful in doing the work that is in front of us without prejudice. May Lord help us out to think and use different herbs and let them come in our thoughts to be used for the benefits of Human race! May our lives be used for something fruitful in our existence in this world!

Having Fever ?

Lifestyle advice when suffering from Fever

Winter is just around the corner in Canada, and the temperature dropping low slowly .Flu season is said to be around. Many of my friends have already suffered with some kind of flu or fever in the last few days. While they suffer and I tried to heal them I notice some things, some misconceptions regarding the nature on how they deal with fever. Some lifestyle adjustments which are commonly confused too .In today’s article we would try to discuss those pointers and look around for some kind of an explanation in what is the right way during such fevers to do ..

1] Rest:

When one has a fever, it clearly is a sign by the physically body saying that it is tired and needs rest. In one way our body is trying to speak with us and telling us to relax and calm down and rest for a while. Thought this being the case, many of us refuses to relax and still keep working. Many of us are up in their feet as soon the fever is gone. They are lucky as their body can withstand that, but not all the time and many times you hear the fever being back after some interval .This has to be blamed for lack of rest given by the individual to himself .What do you think? REST..... is must when in and after fever for some time .

Ohh by the way rest does not mean watching the idiot box or computers or blackberry or playing games... just to let you know!!!!

2] Fast the first day and then Eat light when in fever:

Normally our family doctor advises us to eat whatever one can other than junk food and fried food in fever. Practically I do not think so that happening ... why? Here are my thoughts... you decide if that is right for your or not .When one has fever ,one would notice that the appetite gets low , not only that our mouth has a bitter taste .Thus one tend not to eat at all . Well we in Ayurveda recommends fast for the first day of fever for sure. Fasting not only helps you to build the appetite but also works in destroying the toxins which are the causes of the fever too. (Know more on fasting from my old articles HERE). One can slowly start to eat after one or two days of fast in small bites and at a regular interval. Different part of the world has different habits, some like their chicken noodle soup, others like the "khanjee" others enjoy small soup of vegetables or "khicadhi" too. Does not matter each of this are excellent choices for your stomach .They are not that heavy to digest and healthy. Drinking milk, juice, and other stuff are often advised, my personal recommendation is see how you feel drinking it , if you are OK drink it , but if it effects your health do not .

3] Be warm, but in a fresh aerated room:

The most common question asked when one suffers with fever is: Should one be kept warm or cold? Normally when one gets fever they feel chilly, thus windows are closed, blankets given to such patients. Fine with the perspective, but what is going on wrong here is the air in the room and around the patient can get very stale , thus creating a feeling of suffocation around the patient and others too .It is important to be kept warm under such circumstances , but to an extent ... and not more than that .

4] Warm water:

One fact that I have noticed that many people do is to hardly drink any water when suffering from fever and luckily if they drink, its ice cold .Am I right or no? Understand that our focus has to be on helping the body digest all toxins and throw it out. Are we helping in any way drinking no water or cold water.Do not think so? And for that Ayurveda recommends warm water. The magic power of helping our body digest toxins is in warm water rather than cold water .Try it and see it yourself. Resist the temptation of drinking ice cold water!!!

5] Post fever:

As we take care during the fever it’s very important to make sure one take some more precaution post fever .Rest is important post fever, I have already written that. But also is important to work on your immune system. It’s time to make it strong again ... as due to the attack of toxins it has been weaken... thus try to cultivate some habits ,eat certain food that would help you in building the immune system. In Asian countries, I could thinks of amala , in North America think of maple or apples to boost immune system ... Look out in your world what would boost your health if you ate that after fever .Not to heavy , but still useful for you !!

Seated Forward Bend

Last week we read about a nice asana to work on hamstrings called as Janu Sirsasana .Today we would have just another variation of the same asana called as "Pachimottanasana". Normally in a regular class I would do the Janu Sirsanasana and then do this asana . The asana prior helps the body to be a little flexible and thus makes students work with this asana easily.
“Pashima” means the west, The back of the body from the head to heel in one of the terminology in Sanskrit is called the pashima ,like the posterior in modern terminology . This is the position where one works on stretching the whole back thus its importance in calling “Pashimottanasana".
Another word for asana is “Ugrasana” or “Brahmacharyasana” .

How to do this position?

1] Sit on the floor with stretched legs , same way as we started "Janu Sirsasana".Spine should be erect , neck , back straight , hands on the side .
2] Inhale in and then as you exhale out slowly extend your hands and catch the toes, as you bend on your back.
3] As it becomes easy, make a further grip on the soles, and rest the chin on the knees.
4] Now understand that, this is not that easy position as it’s written. It takes patience and effort to make this position happen in its whole stage.
5] The final goal is to make the chin touch the knee joint and be in that position for a long time, as long as you can hold the position.
6] Inhale, raise the head from the knees and then relax and breathe in and out... to be comfortable.


1] Make sure you are very carefully when bending and doing this position , those who have trouble with back issues ... make sure one be careful while doing this topic .
2] It is very important to do this asana slow... do not hurry or rush in doing or attaining this position , might hurt your back .


1] Toning the abdominal muscles, organs and keep them free from sluggishness.
2] Works good on massaging all the internal organs of the abdomen, gonads.
3] Known work on keeping one's sex appetite in control... thus names as Brahmacharayasana.
4] Works in stretching the muscles and the ligaments of the lower back, lower abdomen.

Chakra Effect:

This asana has its effects on "Svadhistana Chakra”.

Increased Kapha Dosha : Signs and Symptoms

Last week in the current series of Ayurveda 101, we saw what happens when Pitta dosha increases. Today’s post we would see the effects of Kapha Dosha increasing in our body. As discuss before dosha when they increase in our body, they are bound to show some signs which are somewhat warning signs of early disease or trouble you may call. One has to be careful to understand this signs and symptoms to take care of oneself for healthy living.

Increased Kapha Dosha :

1] Agnisadan: Decreased appetite is what this Sanskrit word stands for. Due to increase kapha dosha the first sign that would be seen is definitely decreased appetite. Kapha dosha is represented by the properties of being heavy , cold, slow .When increased all this properties are going to be in excess in our body thus causing the following issues.

2] Alasya : Laziness or alasya another sign of increase kapha dosha , again its due to increased properties of kapha namely heaviness , slow . One would feel to be very lazzy in nature, one urge to work, to do something suddenly is decreased due to such increase kapha .

3] Gaurav : We have been discussing this for the last two and we are bound to see it .. a feeling of heaviness is seen in one's body due to increased kapha dosha . Its not that the weight of the person has increased, its the feeling of being heavy that one may find that bothers.

4] Swetya : Due to increase kapha one ought to see the colors of nails , eyes ,urine ,fecal material to be a little whitish or swetya in Sanskrit .

5] Shaitya : Due to increase kapha , pitta would be decreased in the body thus the both would be craving for heat ... thus constantly a feel of coldness would be seen in a person with increased kapha ... or shaitya .

6]Shlatangata :
Increase of fats around some specific parts of the body can been seen after some months of actual increase kapha dosha ... which is termed as shlatangata .

7] Atinidra : Due to increase heaviness , loss of energy one may see increase sleep in such individuals which is termed as atinidra in Sanskrit .

Dietary Fats : Pros and Cons

Fat. The word itself will bring up something for most people and fro many it isn't pretty! Love it or hate it we find it back in the news, now with the scientific community saying the science was not really there all along.

The low fat craze began with the best of intentions and for those who were overindulging in the macro nutrient, lowering their fat intake was probably a good idea. The trouble began when people began to cut the entire nutrient out of their diets. Going from low fat to no fat and fake fat -all the while the population got heavier and yes fatter. Not everyone- just those caught in the cracks. By cracks I am speaking of people who listen to the advertisers.

Reading a no fat box of cookies made one feel they could enjoy the treat free of concern of the impact it may have on their health, because low fat or non fat was the new way to be eating for weight loss and heart health. That is what the makers of the no fat cookie wanted you to believe. Yet it was not true. That box of cookies gave no satisfaction and hence the entire box could have been eaten to try to get the sense that something yummy and satisfying was just eaten and it was full of sugar. Food consists of micro and macro nutrients and the fact is fat is one of the three macro nutrients and the health and well-being of the human body depends on a regular amount of it, the real thing.

9 Places Fat is Essential

1. Brain – Fats compose 60% of the brain and are essential to brain function, including learning abilities, memory retention and moods. Fats are especially important for pregnant women, since they are integral to fetal brain development.

2. Cells – Fatty acids help your cells stay flexible, as well as building cell membranes.

3. Digestion – Fats slow down the digestion process so the body has more time to absorb nutrients. Fats help provide a constant level of energy and also keep the body satiated for longer periods of time. Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) can only be absorbed if fat is present.

4. Eyes – Fats are essential to eye function.

5. Heart – 60% of our heart’s energy comes from burning fats. Specific fats are also used to help keep the heart beating in a regular rhythm.

6. Immune System –Some fats ease inflammation, helping your metabolism and immune system stay healthy and functioning.

7. Lungs – Lung surfactant, which requires a high concentration of saturated fats, enables the lungs to work and keeps them from collapsing.

8. Nerves – Fats compose the material that insulates and protects the nerves, isolating electrical impulses and speeding their transmission.

9. Vital Organs – Fats cushion and protect your internal organs.

So take another look at your fat intake and let it be from the most natural state possible, this will help eliminate the trans fats without even trying! Look at using butter, ghee, cold water fish, avocado, nuts, eggs with the yolks, coconut oil and olive oil to name a few. Using fat in a balanced manner is the key to a healthy and satisfying diet for life.

Janu Sirsasana

Knee to Head position

Last week in yoga we did a simple, but yet another complicated asana for some namely called as"Vajrasana". Hope many have found it interesting and yet easy to do ... Please let us know if anyone had some doubts or suggestion or had some different ideas while performing the asana. Hope so that what one might think can help others to in doing the positions perfect .In today's post we would start working with some light stretches in sitting position .We hope that you would enjoy them and try them yourself every day if possible. Today we should do the “Janu Sirsasana”.

" Janu " means the knee in Sanskrit , while "Sirsa " is referred to as the head . A position where one brings his head towards his knee in a sitting position is called as "Janu Sirsasana".

How to do the Asana ?

1] To start this asana one has to sit with both the legs stretched straight in front, spine erect, hands on the side, face looking straight in front, neck straight.
2] In this position we first fold our left leg in our knee joint and bring the foot closer to the inner right thigh and keep it closer touching to the right inner thigh.
3] Slowly taking a long deep breathe we then slowly extended our arms trying to catch the right big toe.
4] Care should be taken that the right knee should not be in stretched position throughout the asana. No Bends.
5] At the same time one should slowly then bend our back and try to touch our nose to the knee joint of the right knee.
6] Once one attends this position, one should try to inhale in and out and continue to hold this position for some time.
7] Slowly come out this position and then do it again on the other side.


1] When teaching this position, many students enjoy cheating by just bringing the knee joint up... and thus can reach their fingers to the toes easily. My word of advice is not to try that.
2] Its important to slowly bend as many times either doing this position wrong or doing it forcefully would lead to some ligament tear or bruise...
3] Breathe at proper time... that is important here in this position.
4] Back problem please make sure you have your teacher guiding you for this position.


1] Improves the flexibility of the hamstrings.
2] Strengthen the back, especially the sacrum area.
3] Action of forward bending squeezes the abdomen and thus helps digestion.
4] Works magic on liver, spleen, kidneys...
5] A very beneficial asana for those suffering from Prostate enlargement.

This asana has its effects on "Svadhistana Chakra”.

Increased Pitta Dosha : Signs and Symptoms

Last week we have seen how one can say that his Vatta dosha has been increased in one's body. As a particular dosha gets elevated in one's body, one would immediately see how it would affect and show some signs . It is very important to understand the signs and symptoms of increase doshas as they might help us, they are like early manifestation of diseases in many cases.

Pitta Dosha Increase:

With increase of Pitta in one's body, one would see first and foremost an increase in all its properties or "Gunas " one would say . Here is what would happen as soon as Pitta dosha increases.

1] Pitvenmutranetratwak :
The first signs given by increase pitta dosha are also a sign of fatal diseases namely called as Jaundice. Yellow urine, eyes, skin and stools or also called as in Sanskrit
"Pitvenmutranetratwak ".
Increased pitta dosha does increases heat in one’s body thus disturbing the normal functioning of the blood, creating this condition .If to be explained in normal lay man words.

2] Sudha (hunger):
Pitta increase would show an increase in hunger or appetite of a person for sure. We saw before in pitta dosha ... that pitta is responsible for digestion and increase pitta would also increase digestion, thus one would see increased hunger.

3] Trut(Thirst):
Increased Pitta would also show increases thirst in one too. Understand that pitta dosha is the dosha which has the highest heat in all dosha ... if that is increased the heat is going to increase thus to cool the body is going to ask for more and more water ... thus the reflex of being thirsty all the time would be seen.

4] Daha -Santap( Burning sensation):
Again increase pitta is going to result in increase heat and thus this increased heat would trouble the skin in one way or other... which means it would create the sensation of burning all over the body or a specific part .This is called as Daha or Santap in sanskrit .

5] Sheetkamitva( cooling ):
One’s body tends to ask for cooling substance or effect all the time when one see's increase pitta in the body .This is called as "sheetkamitva" .

6] Murcha (unconsciousness):
This is the most elevated stage of increase pitta and not so seen all the time in humans, unless not cared or attended with medical care. Due to increase Pitta one would see, due the heat affecting the body, mind and the heart... it brings unconsciousness... This has been in seen in Jaundice cases when one would see hepatic coma... which is exactly similar to increase pitta in one's system resulting in coma.

Next week we would see the last dosha namely Kapha dosha .
